Law of the Dead`II

fdcrane

[/fold]

[/fold]

[/fold]

[/fold]

[/fold]

[/fold]

???

Chapter 1. Paper

-Book?

[fold]“This will do.” said the man in lab coat, while staring at a machine.

“Interesting, that looks like a clockwork machine, with all these gears and belts. Doesn’t seem to work in common sense though, you sure about this?” The servant standing next to the doctor-like man replied.

“A piece of very fine paper is just what we need, isn’t it? You will see how amazing this machine could be. Ah, there we go.” He open the output booth of the machine then pick up the processed piece of paper.

“See, close enough.” He give the paper to his fellow.

After touching and feeling the paper, his servant seemed to be astonished for a few second, then said: “It indeed feels like that kind of paper, but how did it…”

“That’s not something I can explain, or at least, not something I will spare my valuable time for.”

After a short conversation, they nodded to the room guard and went out the room where the clockwork is kept.

A few days later back to the doctor-like man’s office, he was writing, or doodling unknown symbols towards the paper.

Then his servant popped in and said, “It’s all done. I’ve spoken with the department in Egypt and offered a reward. We will get some suitable candidates very soon.”

“Good, I’m almost done here as well. Take a look at this.”

“Oh, I see. But I still don’t understand why we need to put so much effort. I mean, I can somehow connect to those…”

“Yeah, but we can’t rely on a somehow ability. And that’s why we need an expert, and the best way to find one is through a test, the test we made.”

“And we have to use my city instead of just question them because…”

“Some potentials won’t show themselves unless they are tested in real. Besides, it’s not likely that you will explode or something just for a one-paged add-on.”

“Alright, if you say so.”

“Just as I expected, an underground playground.”

A month later, somewhere in the Sahara Desert.

“This might not last a very long time tough. It is not an original paper anyway. I would give it four or five days… Six, if you don’t mind the slight corruption of the inner room.”

“Too bad for the last candidate, seventh to be more precise. Still we might be able to wrap things up early enough if lucky.”

After the discussion, the doctor-like man walked into the tent. There were already seven individuals in the tent. Among them are explorers, mercenaries, even spies and assassins, all lured by the reward and awaited an order.

“Glad we are here, you should have already know the rules. Any volunteers?”

[/fold]

Chapter 2. Adventure

-Test?

[fold]My grandmother always told me, “Be wary, be cautious.” Considering my job as a tomb robber, this doesn’t always happen in my life. I was trained by my grandmother anyway, therefore it might be good to keep that in mind.

Well this time, it is really a big deal. The reward they offer was so good that any likes of me will not be able to refuse. Luckily I passed the series of test and won my place in this tent. Seven people in the tent from all over the Egypt aim for one prize.

I thought I was very unlucky for getting the last position in the line. But I was wrong, the first five people have already failed in the first five days. What happened to them, I have no idea, but no one ever came back.

It could be a trap, but it is way too fancy for a trap. Through all these years travelling in Africa, I have been to almost every catacomb, every obelisk and every pyramids, yet I’ve never heard of a city like this. The city itself is not even abandoned but still alive with all the people living inside the wall.

The man who offered the prize said that the existence of this city is a secret, and they will erase our memory after this adventure, but the prize will still be offered. Not that it matters anyway, I think everyone of us was enchanted by the city itself rather than the prize. I could say I would be glad to die somewhere like this, I’m sure they feel the same way, and this made everyone to take the risk despite our number is thinning.

Number six took off this morning, I said “Hope you will be okay.”, but some part of me want him to fail this quest to give me a chance. It is already dusk, and night will fall very soon. It seems he has failed too, and I don’t think I can wait until tomorrow. Something in my mind never stops driving me to get out of this tent and step down stairs in to the dungeon. The prize provider says it will be dangerous to go underground at night, but I don’t care anymore. I have already packed up and am ready to go.

“Oh, mighty Ra, God of the sun. Please guide me on my way forward and let me struggle through whatever difficult awaits ahead.”

My grandmother insists that I should devote myself into the Ancient Egyptian Pantheon. She never told me why, but gave me an amulet before dead. I can feel the power growing inside my body every time touching it, so I took with my through all my adventure. I believe this has always brought me good fortune.

Bless me, grandma, for I’m departing towards so far the greatest adventure.

[/fold]

Chapter 3. Symbol

-Eye?

[fold]All those twisted corridors are filled with dangerous traps. Spikes rising from the floor, poisonous fluid dropping from the ceiling, snake and scorpions hiding in the sand and arrows that comes out of nowhere, all fatal traps awaits silently for someone to trigger. They did get number four though, and the poor man just lies in the corner with an arrow in his heart. I know neither his name nor his career, naturally I looted his body and put whatever valuable into my backpack, it doesn’t seems he’s going to use those anyway. Just end his life somewhere like this, which should be an honor.

Having spent several hour in the dark corridors, now I’m here in a small chamber, the first place that can be called a room. Not that it is big, but it has four wall and of course a roof. The chamber itself is slightly out of its shape and some of its supporting columns have already collapsed. I did concerned my safety issues for a while, but then realized that I’m in nowhere near a safe place the moment stepping into the entrance.

I started to examine every corner of this room, the west and east wall with the entrance and exit are totally blank, only some of the scratches appears on and near both of the doors. Someone struggled to open the door apparently, but I didn’t see any corpse lying on the ground. Did he or she get out of the room in time, or the corpse were consumed by something? I don’t know the answer, yet I can feel something beating the south wall of the chamber, which might be the something in the question. I decided not to go anywhere near that wall.

The floor were covered with sand, it took me half an hour to excavate the middle. There was a symbol on the ground, and I could recognize it just with one glance. It’s the Eye of Horus, the symbol of the falcon god in Egyptian pantheon. Horus is the sky god of Egyptian, has followers all over the ancient Egypt. I guess that’s the reason why they want those who are familiar with this area to dig in. Yet the city above doesn’t seem to be familiar with any ancient Egyptian style, it’s more like a Greek city states or so.

These question doesn’t seems to matter right now, for I have a more important puzzle to solve. The eye of Horus could means a lot of things. I have already check the north wall, there are nothing but sixteen basket hieroglyphs carved on it, thirteen of which are used to form the symbol of Nephthys, while other three were just basket.

Nephthys is the guardian of the dead, which I assume to be those poor souls stuck insider the wall to the south. This means 13/16 chances to become one of them, on the other hand 3/16 could get me out of this. The eye of Horus was used to describe fraction, and 3/16 is 1/8 plus 1/16. That means I need to check the eyebrow, left side of the eye and nowhere else.

[/fold]

Chapter 4. Goddess

-Cat?

[fold]Well, the good thing is that corridor is not filled with traps anymore, and it is straight forward and there is no chance to get lost. On the other hand, the narrow, straight corridor could still be a disaster especially when you a facing a group of demons.

Those demons were tough, carved on their body was the mark of Apophis, the archenemy of Ra, and should be responsible for the death of three or four of my competitors. I can hardly count the number while fighting, not to say to see if there were any precious left.

A short corridor, fifty meter in length, took me an hour to pass through. But I managed to driven those demons back to where they should be at last. Being tired enough to look back for any trophy, I stepped into the huge hall immediately.

After the stone door got shut, I lied on the ground for a while just to catch my breath. Then I stood up to look around. This is a shrine, with all the mural paintings and statues. Also some kitty mummy can be find in the corner. One don’t need to know how to read hieroglyphs, which by the way I do, to understand that this room is a small temple of Bastet, the cat Goddess of Egypt.

It makes more sense that after defeating the Apophis, or rather his avatar, you will grant yourself a visit of Bastet. In some ancient Egyptian mythology, she killed that evil worm as the eye of Ra. This associated with the lunar eye in the previous room, and it seems I need to solve the puzzle of the solar eye to move forward.

I approached the altar, the hieroglyph on the floor said that there needs to be a tribute to speak with the Goddess. I tried everything valuable things, include what I looted before, but none of these were accepted.

The last thing I have is my grandmother’s amulet. I would never risk it, but some part in me finally urged myself to put it in the bow. Bastet accepted it, and I lost my only memento from my grandma. As I was still feeling bad for what I have done, the huge statue of the cat goddess in the middle of the room started to glow. Then I received a female voice in my mind.

“Welcome to the temple of Bastet, posterity of Horus.”

“Posterity of Horus? You mean me?”

“Who else is here? I see you are carrying the sky amulet with you.”

“I got it from my grandmother.”

“Then she must be a posterity herself, this amulet will never show its power without certain blood. Thus, what do you wish to know?”

“I want to know how to get the precious in this temple.”

“Oh, this is not my temple, my child. And I don’t belong to this dungeon either. This is just a shrine room to worship me. If you want, I can have a talk with Thoth. He helped your ancestor, I’m sure he will be glad to help you as well.”

“Yes, please.”

Nobody would refuse the help from the God who created the hieroglyphs. As I was waiting for my answer, I wandered in the shrine to read what was written on the wall. Accidentally, I stepped on one of the blocks on floor. Next thing I know, the wall on both side started to move and demons started to gush into the room. A group after a group, there were no end to them. Then I received words from the goddess again.

“My child, those demons are associated with Apophis, and the best way to deal with those vermin is cat. Thoth has got no exact answers for you, yet he want to tell you that the answer is about the cat. Take the amulet, create a field with it. It will give you five minutes, use the time to find the answer.”

After the message, the amulet, my amulet fell on the floor. Then all the demons were stopped like a statue. I started to examine every mummified cat in this room. But I find nothing, those mummies were not the answer.

Only one minutes left, I suddenly noticed the story were carved on the wall behind the statue of Baster. It is the story of Ra fighting against the Apophis, and the last part was missing.

In the story, the cat defeated the serpent. I might be able to defeat those evil creature with this cat. I took out a little ice pick from my backpack, then started to carve hieroglyph on the wall.

Although the seal was broken in the middle of my task, I still managed to end the story in time before this room collapse. The moment I finish the last glyph, all demons in the room shattered into dust, and so did the huge statue. A ladder towards deeper underground was revealed.

Chapter 5. Destination

-Water?

[fold]It took like forever to climb down, but the room under the shrine is even grander and much blue.

I never thought there would be a lake so deeply underground, in the middle of the biggest desert on the earth. Yet I find myself drown to this odd configuration of nature. With a few minute of searching, I finally find a boat that can carry me into the water.

It seems amazing. The depth of the lake is immeasurable and I cannot see the boundary either. The only thing I can do is just sail ahead and keep my direction straight, fortunately I have a compass in my backpack.

I spent two hours sailing forward, then realized that this is not just a lake but an ocean. The water were salty, and cold wind would blow from the south. Sailing in an ocean would be much more dangerous, and to prevent from getting lost, I need to keep an eye on my compass every second. Well there were nothing else to do anyway.

With three more hours spent, I no longer have the mood to admire the landscape. Finally did I find the destination of this adventure- an island. Two separated paths with a guardian on the shore. That’s typical for any adventure, isn’t it?

After landed and got closer to the monster, I recognized it. A sphinx, although much smaller than the original one, was wandering on the beach. I tried to sneak through, but failed and get noticed.

The Sphinx seems to be nice, but I can still see its claws and teeth. Those dangerous things can tear up a human easily, and I don’t want to fight those, or at least, not when I was in ultra-fatigue.

“Speak out your riddle. I’ll just answer it and get pass.”

“Well, I was just going to say ‘Welcome and congratulation on your victory.’, but it seems you want to play… Then the riddle it is.”

“…Proceed, please.”

“I am something people love or hate. I change people’s appearances and thoughts. If a person takes care of them self I will go up even higher. To some people I will fool them. To others I am a mystery. Some people might want to try and hide me but I will show. No matter how hard people try I will never go down. What am I?”

“Age. That’s an easy one, or you are doing this on purpose.”

“What do you mean? I choose an easy one because I’m not gonna stop you anyway.”

“Oh, never mind. Can I go now?”

“Ah, about that… You need to choose one of the precious… On the left side is a fountain which provide you with immortality, and on the right side is…”

No more chat with that stupid creature anymore, time grab my reward for this journey.

Chapter 6. Partner

-Girl?

[fold]“Welcome aboard.” The doctor-like man seemed to be waiting for her.

“Aboard? I was here for my reward.” The girl replied.

“Oh, about that… Let me ask you a question, why don’t you choose the fountain?”

“I hate water, any kind of water.”

“That might certainly be the answer, but… Okay, another question- How old are you, I mean, really?”

“Sixteen, is there a problem?”

“You certainly looks like a sixteen-year-old, but…”

“Alright, shut up. Just give me the prize you promised.”

“I would like to offer you a job.”

“Not interested.”

“How about this?” The man took out an amulet from his pocket.

“Give me that!”

“I find it in some ancient ruins, finders keepers loses weepers… I can give it to you, if you work for me.”

“……Fine, I’ll work for you… for now. Just give me the amulet back.” The girl hesitated for a second and said.

“Good! You will soon see how amazing this job could be.” He threw the amulet to the girl.

“Alright, what should I do exactly?” She grabbed the amulet, put it on her neck carefully.

“Okay, from now on, you are my chief assistant. First, I need you to meet my servant, Al.”

“Glad to meet you, Miss.” His servant just came out of nowhere, “I’ll explain what you need to know…”

“When you are done, I need you to take a look at this, it is your specialty.” The man interrupted, gave the girl a document folder, then left the office.

???

If I’m asked how to deal with a worm that could possibly swallow the sun, my answer will be- a man, a girl and a book. This is how she met with them and formed a somehow strange team, and just a tip of the iceberg about what they have done for the world. It is indeed a weird start, but thank to that, I can still live to tell this story to you, my children. I hope you will enjoy it, and who knows, maybe we will actually meet them some other day… when the time is right.
